Visual design work covers every picture, image, and illustration made for a game, from the characters and the scenery all the way to the shape of the letters.
When you hear “art”, you probably think of a painting or a picture, but it actually describes making all sorts of things, including 3D objects made like statues and animations created by planning out how something moves.
Game art and graphics are very important. Imagine a picture that anyone would love from the moment they saw it, or a visual never seen before that steals your heart away in an instant. What’s needed for visual design

Actually, the people who draw really beautiful pictures are less people who can draw well and more people who can “see” the world well.

This doesn’t mean just spacing out and staring at the world.
Take a long and careful look at something that catches your eye and think about what it is that you like about it. As you keep looking, you’ll see what makes it special, understand what you like about it, and make it your own. That’s what it means to really “see” the world.

Even if lots of people have already fuzzily picked up on what makes that one thing special, you might come to highlight a part of it that is actually amazing, enchanting, and one that no-one has ever properly noticed before.

If you can make this point yours and use it to create a visual all your own, then you’ve taken the first step in making art that’ll make anyone who sees it feel that sense of “wow”.

How to build up visual design skills

Work hard at arts and crafts

…But to be able to take something you think is interesting, make it your own, and turn it into art, you’ll need some artistic skills, of course.
For example, even if you’re doing classwork where you have to draw just an everyday apple, don’t think of it as boring. Look at the apple closely and find something particular about it that you like.Do that, and you’re sure to draw a picture of an apple that you’ll love, that’s unique to you.
